Summer 2016

Greetings from Crested Butte! I suppose we could sing: “It’s been a long cold lonely winter…” Long and cold? Well, there’s truth to that, as amazingly enough the leaves are only just budding out here in the high country. Lonely? That could explain our lack of communication… it’s hard to believe the last update was at the end of the 2015 summer season. Time flies indeed.

Despite our silence online, we have played some great shows throughout this past winter and spring. Mid-January found us at the Dickens Opera House…despite the fact that it took us over seven hours to get there and that Karen was in a sling due to shoulder surgery, we had a wonderful gig in that wonderful venue. The end of that month we played a sold out show at our local Gunnison Arts Center, and rocked the full house once again in Montrose at the Turn of the Century. We were fortunate to get to head to the San Luis Valley in early March, where we helped the Alamosa Brewing Company celebrate 10 years of business as well as play a gig at one of our favorite venues, Wildwood Music. We are continually amazed and honored by the kindnesses of people we have met: a special highlight that trip was an incredible poem written by our friend and fan Harold, as well as personalized gift bags from another friend and fan, Margaret. We played an Easter show for senior citizens in our valley, some wonderful private parties, and just kicked off another season for the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park (our fourth time). It was the best one yet, despite the threatening weather…we were even accompanied by a fire dancer for part of one set!

The Beatles music was interspersed with lots of work, travel, and change for the four members of the band, bringing us up to this cusp of the summer season.

We’re really looking forward to playing some new venues (Stony Ridge Pavilion, Silt; Old Town Fort Collins; Alamosa’s Rails and Ales street party) as well as returning to some familiar and favorite spots (Buckley Park, Durango; the iBar Ranch in Gunnison; the Rio Grande Scenic Railway; Redstone Town Park…) Check our schedule for a complete listing of upcoming shows. It promises to be a wonderful summer for music…we look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones as we share our take on the timeless music of the Beatles. Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, Mountain Rails Summer Concert Series

Doctor Robert, The Beatles Tribute from Crested Butte, just capped off an amazing summer of music last weekend at The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad’s Mountain Rails Concert Series. Two perfect days for outdoor music, in a beautiful and remote setting, made for a great turnout both days. Saturday’s show was even sold out, and we can’t thank everyone enough for making the trip to La Veta Pass for this unique concert venue. We even entertained the first class and diamond class cars with some acoustic Beatles music on the way home on Saturday. Since Memorial Day Weekend, we’ve played 19 shows around Colorado, which is nearly 60 hours of music! For the third straight year, we started our summer at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park’s “Music on the Mountain” series.

June brought us back for a second time to Paonia’s Blue Sage Center for the Arts, as well as the first annual “Beatles and Brewskis” event hosted by Acme Liquor in our hometown of Crested Butte.

July started the busy season with our fourth appearance at Salida’s “Thursdays @ Six” series, our second show at Samana Lounge in Vail, our second straight headlining show at Aspen’s Fourth of July festivities, a long-awaited return to Durango for “Concerts in the Park,” our fourth show at Nissi’s in Lafayette, our first show at the amazing new venue in Colorado Springs, The Gold Room, a private show in Denver for our successful Kickstarter campaign, and our second performance at The Inn as Aspen.

August was equally busy as we played our second year at Redstone’s “Magical Moments” concert series, our second headlining spot at Crested Butte’s Festival of the Arts, our second show at KAFM’s Radio Room in Grand Junction, a private dentist convention at Telluride Conference Center, a headlining performance for The Gunnison Car Show, two unforgettable concerts at Rio Grande Scenic Railroad’s “Mountain Rails” summer concert series at La Veta Pass, and closing out August’s schedule was a Tour de Forks performance at a private home in Skyland as a fundraiser for the Crested Butte Center for the Arts.

Ajax Tavern, Aspen Beatles Tribute, Team Concise

Doctor Robert, The Beatles Tribute band that came together almost five years ago, had reason for a special Veuve Clicquot Champagne toast this past Sunday. Thanks to Team Concise (http://www.teamconcise.com/) from England for arranging our return to Ajax Tavern at The Little Nell in Aspen. It was the most perfect spring afternoon for apres ski Beatles music, and we couldn’t have asked for a better turnout. Smiles were everywhere!

Two years previous, we played Ajax Tavern for the first time. It may have been one of the most impressionable gigs at that time, as we met the good people from Team Concise, as well as many other individuals that eventually hired us for various performances. We were even invited back to the largest ski in/ski out home in the world that evening in 2013, and played a short acoustic set for about 25 people in a 22,000 square foot house that was partially built under Ajax Mountain.

Fast forward to 2015. Team Concise is back in Aspen, and called us to play for a private party above Woody Creek on Friday. We weren’t able to confirm any other dates around this party, so we planned for a one-show weekend when we left Crested Butte, and figured we’d be home Saturday. Little did we know that when we arrived, the Ajax Tavern gig had already been arranged, and we were confirmed for Sunday.

This is when things got interesting for Karen.

She had made plans months in advance to be at a going-away party in Gothic (the only access in the winter is a four-mile ski from a trailhead near Crested Butte), and really couldn’t cancel that trip, so a decision to “take it for the team” happened. At 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning after four hours of sleep, Karen drove “Lucy (our Chevy Tahoe)” five hours back to Crested Butte, skied four miles into Gothic with instrument in tow, played music and enjoyed friends’ company well into the evening, got up at 6:30 Sunday morning, skied four miles out of Gothic, jumped back into “Lucy” and drove five hours back to Aspen, got dressed, and played four hours of Beatles music!!! Anyone that is reading this should give Karen all the credit for this monumental performance. Without her effort and dedication, we wouldn’t have had another chance to play Ajax Tavern, and make even more connections.

We talked with different people about playing various places around the world. A handful of Aspen locals inquired about playing private parties at their homes, one inquiry was about us playing in England, and another was if we’d consider playing in Barbados. Whether we hear from these good people again or not, it’s pretty exciting to think of future possibilities for Doctor Robert, The Beatles Tribute from Crested Butte, CO.

Inn at Aspen, Samana Lounge Vail

Last weekend Doctor Robert, The Beatles tribute, played two new venues, The Inn at Aspen and Samana Lounge in Vail. After our “First Fridays” show at Black Nugget in Carbondale, we had an earlier performance for apres ski at The Inn at Aspen. This was our first show in Aspen since The Fourth of July last summer, and it seems we weren’t forgotten! Thanks to the many “regulars” that came out, as well as any first-timers, we can’t believe how much fun it is to play in Aspen! On Sunday, we made our way to The Samana Lounge in Vail. The World Cup was in town, so the Sunday show was full of music fans from around the world. Thanks to everyone that made for a great first show at Samana! We met people from 21 to 81 years young, from places like Argentina and the Ukraine. It just kept getting more crowded and more enthusiastic as the night went on, with the peak of the evening coming during the “Hey Jude” encore. What a great “community” experience, watching people that have never met each other joined arm-in-arm, singing their hearts out to the greatest rock and roll music ever written.

We’ve been using personal vehicles to pull our trailer full of gear for over four years, and the road is taking its toll. We make enough money to cover expenses, but don’t make enough to put away into savings for a large purchase such as this. That’s why we’re asking for family, friends, and fan support through Kickstarter. Any amount helps, as we don’t get a penny if we don’t reach our goal of $16,500.

Doctor Robert, The Colorado Beatles Tribute Band

Doctor Robert, The Colorado Beatles Tribute band, played two very memorable shows to close out an unbelievable July. We performed our third year at Salida’s “Thursdays @ 6” series at Riverside Amphitheater on Thursday, July 24th. Though it was a rainy evening, we still managed to play a full show to a group of die-hard Beatles fans. Thanks to everyone for sticking it out with us, and for your patience while we scrambled to stay dry.

The next night brought us back to one of our favorite small taverns, The Black Nugget in Carbondale. This was our third time playing the Black Nugget as a full band, and it only gets better every time. This may have been the longest show we’ve played, with two marathon sets including over 60 songs played! We even covered Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” during our version of “Helter Skelter.” Here are a handful of recordings from the show:

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, Dickens Opera House

Summer has officially begun… Doctor Robert performed at the kickoff party for Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park’s “Music on the Mountain” series for the second straight year, which means the Colorado outdoor summer music season has started. Thanks to everyone that braved the rain and wind to enjoy some Beatles music with Doctor Robert. This year 1,079 cans were dontated, quite a bit more than the 866 cans from last year’s kickoff party.

Our second night of music brought us to Dickens Opera House in Longmont for our first show at this amazing venue. The stage, sound, staff, and energy in the room are unparalleled, and we can’t wait to return to Dickens this fall/winter. Check out some recordings from the night here:

Wildwood Sounds in Del Norte

Doctor Robert can’t thank the good people of Del Norte and Wildwood Sounds enough for the amazing experience this past Saturday. We played 55 songs, over 200 minutes of music, and had the best time playing for an enthusiastic crowd. This was our fourth time playing Wildwood, and the place was standing-room only. We’re honored that so many of these fans have seen us every time we’ve been in Del Norte. Thanks to Stephen and Konnie for all the love we feel when we visit Wildwood Sounds.
